| Whelpo Rugmakers |
The group was formed in 1981 after Diana Greenwood of Whelpo House,Caldbeck, put a letter in St. Kentigern's Parish Magazine, Caldbeck, asking if anyone was interested in carrying on the traditional craft of 'hooky' and 'proddy' rugmaking. Five ladies responded and the group has been meeting fortnightly ever since, mainly at Whelpo. The group design and work their own rugs in modern style, depicting Lakeland scenes, Swaledale and Herdwick sheep and abstract designs.
|
A few years after their formation, their fame spread to America, following a visit from an American lady, Regis Wright, who had a group of rugmakers in the USA and had heard of our group (probably from some publication). |
