Reports

9 October 2008

It could be reported simply that on October 9th, the Thursday Club visited the Sandford Arms for lunch as their last outing of the year, but this statement does not begin to cover what was a most happy and companionable mystery outing. I jotted down a few of the villages we went through: Edenhall to Langwathby, over the railway line to Culgaith, a mini-tour of picturesque Appleby, then Warcop and finally Sandford. We enjoyed the lovely sandstone houses of the Eden Valley with their attractive gardens seen to such an advantage from a coach window. Then, after a delicious lunch, we headed home by way of Bolton and Cliburn then on to Eamont Bridge where we turned to go along the side of beautiful Ullswater. Finally, we took the Berrier Road where we marvelled at our own Northern Fells.

Our thanks must go to Bim for his knowledge and driving skills and also to Liz, our intrepid organiser, who once again gave us such a memorable outing.

13 August 2008

It was a somewhat dismal day for the Mystery Outing on the 13th August.  However, the spirits of members and friends were not dampened as we journeyed to our unknown destination.

In Carlisle we passed our ancient Castle and a wonderful display of flowers at Hardwick Circus. Soon after, we headed north on the Motorway and across the border. Unfortunately, the views of ‘Bonny Scotland’ were limited by rain on the outside and condensation on the inside of the coach windows.

Our first stop was at Gretna Outlet Village for refreshments and a browse in the shops. Quite a number of parcels were seen being brought on board. And still it rained!

We travelled on to Ecclefechan (what a lovely name!) and lunch at Cressfield Country House Hotel. One of our number was celebrating a birthday and was given a musical congratulation. By the time we left this lovely town - birthplace of the philosopher Thomas Carlyle - the rain had stopped.

We headed home through the lovely Esk Valley, the river a magnificent sight after all the rain. It was a happy occasion in spite of the weather, thanks to Liz Boydell and her team and to Bim Tyson for a safe journey.
