Calor Village of the Year 2008

Welcoming speech to the judges

13 August 2008

Caldbeck Parish Hall

Alan Tyson, vice chair Caldbeck Parish Council

I want to welcome and thank all the people who have come along to represent the vast array of organisations and interests that take place in and around the parish of Caldbeck.
Also I would like to introduce the parish to the Judges:

ERIC ROBSON *

DAVID HART

COLIN CHEYNE

SALLY ORRELL

My name is Alan Tyson, I am vice chair of Caldbeck Parish Council. I also run the football team.

I've only lived in two villages so far, Greysouthern (half way between Cockermouth and Workington) and here in Caldbeck.

When growing up in Greysouthern there was very little to do. Although there was the usual amenities.

Having got married and moved to Caldbeck. I could not believe the amount of activities that take place here. In the thirty years I have lived here the activities, organisations and clubs, for old and young have mushroomed and there are far to many to remember. It just goes from strength to strength. In the same period Greysouthern has gone the other way. the School closed and was made into houses the pub became flats and the shop closed also the post office. The village just became a place to sleep.

Back to Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket although there is a shortage of affordable housing we have quite a lot of young families which keep the nursery school. toddler group, playschool and Fellview school, with a healthy turnover of children. Which bodes well for the school and Parish.

Two weeks ago I visited Barrow, on the submarine pen at B.A.E. systems there were four large banners that read I heart Barrow. It seems to me that Greysouthern has lost its heart but the parish of Caldbeck is all heart, so much so that it is positively bursting.

So I can honestly say I heart The Parish and all the people that make it so, very very special.
We would like to ask the judges to mingle around the different tables. Each table being occupied by a different organisation, club , or other interests. Have a chat and ask Questions. You will be able to soak in all the enthusiasm, in the hope that you will see that this community is the envy of many. THANK - YOU.
